Internal Medicine

Internal medicine unit at Urlavet

Too little exercise and an unsuitable diet cause many illnesses in our pets, just as they do in people. Obesity is common, and metabolic diseases in particular can develop quietly until they become serious problems.

Check-ups

A check-up should include some basic tests that apply at every age, plus extra tests depending on the animal’s age. A standard check-up package covers the parameters that assess general body functions (complete blood count and basic biochemistry). On top of this, tests are added for age and adjusted to the individual animal. We recommend a routine check-up once a year, and more often in some cases. Results recorded as numbers over time show how your pet is changing much more clearly. Even regular weight checks can tell us a lot about possible illness.

Allergies

Allergies do not only show up as skin problems; they can also cause chronic diarrhoea. They can also be confused with autoimmune or metabolic diseases that cause the same signs. Allergy tests, which play a key role in finding the allergen, are carried out at our hospital, and we work with reference laboratories when needed. We support allergy treatment started under the laboratory’s guidance with acupuncture and homeopathy. We have also had good results with allergy vaccines made for the individual animal (hyposensitisation).

Dermatology

Dermatology deals with skin diseases. Skin lesions often look alike, but the cause may be a fungal infection, parasites, allergy, hormonal disorders, metabolic disease, nutritional problems or cancer. To tell them apart, we routinely carry out the necessary laboratory tests (skin scrapings, fungal cultures, skin biopsies and so on) at our hospital, and work with reference laboratories when needed.
