Orthopaedics and Pain Management

Orthopaedics and pain management unit at Urlavet

Orthopaedics does not only mean surgery. Many orthopaedic conditions can be prevented and managed without surgery. This process starts when the animal is young and continues into old age. Puppies should start having check-ups from two months of age, and these should continue until they reach maturity. In this way, problems linked to diet, genetics and exercise can be prevented, and chronic problems that may appear later in life can be spotted and stopped in time. Regular check-ups, weight monitoring and gait analysis are essential for this. With a holistic approach, the effects of movement on the muscles and skeleton are assessed and ways to prevent and treat problems can be developed. Sometimes a muscle spasm can last for years, affect the whole spine and cause various changes there. It should be remembered that hip dysplasia can damage not only the hip but also the knees, the spine and even the neck. The pain that comes with these problems makes the condition worse.

Removing the pain alone is often enough for many orthopaedic conditions to start healing. Medication, homeopathy, manual therapy, laser acupuncture and gold acupuncture are pain management methods that we use successfully and are known for. Since organ failure can also develop with age, the side effects of long-term medication should not be ignored. Sometimes, even where surgery cannot help much, pain management allows patients to live remarkably comfortable lives. We follow new techniques and developments in this field and use them at our hospital.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is widely used in human medicine, especially for diseases of the muscles, skeleton and nervous system. In Turkey it is not yet widely used or known for animals, but we have been using some physiotherapy methods at our hospital for a long time. Physiotherapy is essential for us after operations and for paralysed patients. Physiotherapy protocols are prepared for the patient’s condition, and treatments are carried out by us or taught to the owner so that they can be applied effectively.
